Half Models

We are building traditional builders' half hull models.

These models were originally for ascertaining the shape of a hull, the builder could carve and shape until he was happy with the form, and from these scale models a set of plans could then be developed.

The models we build could be used in the same manner as they were originally intended, but nowadays they are used more for the overall aesthetics of the shape and materials used.

At the moment we are concentrating on models that have some Tasmanian historical significance e.g.'Derwent', a One Design Class. 'Piner's Punt', a work boat used on the rivers of the West Coast, to access the Huon Pine.

Mrs. Wilson's Dinghy', an historic rowing dinghy, now housed at the Tasmanian Maritime Museum.

We also do a 'Queenscliff Couta Boat', a sailing fishing boat from Victoria.

All models are made from select Tasmanian specialty timbers, mounted on solid timber, with a brief description and history on the back and are ready to hang.

Other models can be made to order, from a lines plan.

Timbers used in the hulls is generally Huon Pine and/or King Billy Pine, with mount boards of Tasmanian Oak, Celery Top Pine or Myrtle.(Other timbers can be used of course, to suit your requirements.)

Allan and Jan supplied  a great deal of information  in the form of plans and photos  for Ned  to  build  a whole model of "Skerry" . Allan has mounted the model  on a pivot  structure attached to the keel so that the model can be positioned at any angle. Skerry was built in the fifties in Sydney.

She was named after the Skerry Isles around Sweden.
